The Buckhead Chapter,
National Charity League:
Touching Hearts, Serving Atlanta
Buckhead Chapter mothers and daughters served more than 7533 total volunteer hours at 15 Atlanta area philanthropies between April 2009 and March 2010, working hand-in-hand to better our community.
We delivered dozens of meals through Meals on Wheels to Fulton County senior citizens and in many cases, were the only smiling faces seen that day.
We entertained children and served as tour guides in support of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
We sorted, inspected, packed and donated thousands of cans and boxes of food for those in need at the Product Rescue Center of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
By bagging diapers, making blankets, donating clothes, and wrapping and distributing Christmas presents, we made life a little easier for the patrons of the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.
We supported the arts by serving as ushers at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's family and children's concerts and helped with its Decorators' Show House and Garden Tours.
We assisted with preparations for the String Fling, made dinosaur puppets and volunteered at Patron Parties at the Center for Puppetry Arts.
We let waiting families in the Pediatric ICU at Egleston know that others were thinking of them by providing snacks. We made cheerful door signs and IV pole decorations that brightened the days of many sick children. We made or donated more than 250 Halloween costumes, plus holiday gifts and Valentine boxes, benefiting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
We were the life of the party at Northside Shepherd’s Center, bringing youth and high spirits to bowling , bingo, holiday parties and luncheons. Our donations of everyday as well as special prizes were truly appreciated by those who have so little.
Our preparation and delivery of 50 meals at a time lightened the burden on dozens of families of critically ill children at the Ronald McDonald House. We served meals and provided social and emotional support to the families of the patients.
We played with children, prepared and served meals, created a library where we read to children and they can select books to read, built a reading corner in Eden Village (a temporary residence for mothers with children), and provided behind-the-scenes support at City of Refuge.
We offered support to older, underprivileged youth of our city by serving meals and assissting with the "Go-Girl-Go" summer program, tutored during the school year, and helped with a butterfly project at AGAPE.
Our love of animals showed in our two new philanthropies. We walked dogs, made fleece blankets and helped with adoptions at Small Dog Rescue. And we assisted with the Therapeutic Riding Program at Chastain Horse Park. Our combined love of animals and desire to help those in need are evidenced by our hours spent assisting this disadvantaged population.
Our love for our city has demonstrated by the many hours given to the national landmark, Historic Oakland Cemetery. Hostessing at lectures and assisting with festivals kept us involved in this special part of Atlanta's history.
Ffinally, our on-site support of the Race for the Cure benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation helped raise thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and education.
In addition, we adopted two new philanthropies: Computers for Youth, where we will help train 6th graders selected to receive home computers to encourage their interest in learning, and Hospice Atlanta, where we will provide food and activities for children and their families visiting loved ones on weekends.
All in all, we donated an estimated $40,000 worth of goods and thousands of hours of service to our philanthropies during the year ending March 30, 2010. Many thanks for all you have done to share your time, talents, and resources with those so in need. You truly are a treasure to our city and an example to others of the value of a life of service.
